Diary of The Traveling Guitar Case

My journey has been a whirlwind! I’ve had the most exciting time on my road trip.

Shelia, Dan, and I headed west, leaving Nashville, eventually ending in The Golden State, California. Our experience gave me a chance to see the wonders of our beautiful country.

Our 1st stop was Route 66!

We found ourselves traveling to Phoenix on the famous Route 66 highway. Also known as the Main Street of America, or the Mother Road, the route was one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System. This famous highway took us to the Gift Designers Conference in Phoenix where I got to watch Shelia teach a class to gift basket creators. She even brought me to the front where I showcased my Nashville design. I was proud of her, and I must admit, I was popular there too! We stayed at the Renaissance Hotel where Dan and I kicked back by the pool for some R&R and guy time.

We had an exciting time while in Phoenix seeing all the Saguaro Cactus! They are so Big and Beautiful! Shelia made me sit on a Prickly Pear cactus for a photo op. Ouch! We even got to see the Grand Canyon and Sedona as well!!

The next big adventure took us to the London Bridge and the Mojave Desert

When I first heard, we were going to the London Bridge, I thought we were about to hop on a plane to England. I had no idea there was a London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Originally built in the 1830’s in England and spanned the River Thames in London, England, the bridge was purchased by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London in 1968. McCulloch, who saw the opportunity for a tourist attraction, had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge cut and transported to the United States for the new construction in Arizona. The Arizona bridge was constructed from the original masonry of the 1830’s bridge and was completed in 1971.

During our stop, we stepped into a replica English phone booth, which they call a “telephone box.” We planned on calling our family back in Nashville but remembered our cell phone was much easier to use. Shelia then put me on the famous Blue Chair where we had a scenic view of the London Bridge. I could just hear my friend Kenny Chesney singing, “The Old Blue Chair.” In the background.

Next up was the Mojave Desert, located between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Singing sand dunes, cinder cone volcanoes, a large Joshua tree forest, and carpets of spring wildflowers are found within this 1.6-million-acre park. We stopped along the way to catch a few photos, but I couldn’t wait to get back in the car because it was HOT!

One of our stops on our way back was in El Paso Texas!

Our journey continued to the high desert community of El Paso, Texas. Sitting on the border of the United States and Mexico, I could almost see another country across the Rio Grande. I once heard of a legend where Billy the Kid was the only man to ever escape the old El Paso jail.

Our stop included a visit to So El Paso, a gifting business owned by Anne. The staff was so friendly, and they even gave us a tour.

The Journey Home

By now, I started to feel a little homesick, so I talked Dan into driving the car back towards Nashville. The drive, although long, seems to fly by with all the wonderful scenery outside, but maybe that’s because I slept most of the way.

I’m so glad to be back in the Music City where I can practically hear the country music outside my window. We had a blast on our trip and it’s one I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
